Sailor Moon Crystal “Season 4” is a 2-part theatrical release titled “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie.” Part 1 was originally set for September 11th 2020 but due to the global pandemic, it was postponed to January 8th 2021. Part 2 released a month later on February 11th 2021. It’s now available on Netflix worldwide from June 3 2022 for international viewers!
Sailor Moon Eternal is based on the Dream Arc/Dead Moon Arc, known as ‘Sailor Moon SuperS’ in the 90s anime series, though it follows closely to the manga (which has a very different storyline and new characters)!
The story follows on from Sailor Moon Crystal season 3’s cliffhanger ending; with Usagi and Chibiusa hearing the sound of a bell ringing.
Chiaki Kon (director for Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3) directed the two films. Kazuko Tadano (character designer for the original 90s Sailor Moon anime) returned to design characters for the project.

Why is Sailor Moon in her Eternal form? Isn’t this Season 4 (SuperS)?
Good question! If you’re familiar with the 90s anime, Usagi does not become Eternal Sailor Moon until the 5th and final arc “Sailor Stars”. This is because “Sailor Moon Crystal” follows the storyline of the manga, and Usagi and the other Sailor Guardians become their “Eternal” forms towards the end of this arc.

Ok… so is it still the Dream Arc or the Princess Kaguya short Manga? As we all know, there was this Sailor Moon S Movie, Hearts On Ice. And it’s actually still based from the manga, a short season presenting Luna to appear as a human and disguised as Princess Kaguya, it came between Season 3 and 4. Could this be possibly a remake of this movie?
Although it could still be the Dream Arc since it only has 11 acts (Act 39 to 49) and most likely, more cuts especially humor scenes.
I’m on the fence about this. Dream Arc is 10 chapters total, and the last few minutes of season 3 was its opening. That’s 2 movies 2 and half hours long and would cover the whole storyline, which is MUCH better in the manga. Full disclosure, Dream Arc was my favorite Arc of the manga, but SuperS was my least favorite season. It was incredibly badly handled, plagued with bad animation, awful filler episodes, and the final battle that wasn’t. I was really hoping that they handle it well, because I’ve been wanting this since Crystal came out, and will be PISSED if comes out crap again.
This was also my favorite manga arc. It is like night and day comparing the super s manga to the super s 90s anime.
I think the dream arc manga was the most elaborate and in depth for story lines.
This might be possible. The anime series episodes was only like 20 mins of footage, if you get rid of commercial breaks and opening and closing credits and teasers for the next episode. :)
I hope they stick to the manga as tight as they have for the last three crystal seasons.

*GASP* WHAAAAAAT?! No way! I’ve actually gone back to watch 90’s season 4 (thank you, SMD event!) And I’m enjoying each episode. I have no idea HOW they’d do it as a movie. Call me a sucker for punishment, but I like how the drama is spelled out in the episodes. Hmmmm….

I think this might be for the best. I tried to get through Super S several times and couldn’t help but skip through most of it. Consolidating it into a streamlined story might be the best choice for this particular arc, and might even make it better. We shall see.

The Crystal season were not good,s3 was better but can’t compete with sailormoon S first version so if its a movie i think The animation and The drawing will be better
More budget! Same director!! Movies will be a perfect setting for how epic the entire Dead Moon arc is! Their power ups at the end ALONE will be brilliant!!! One-time transformations that will (hopefully) be works of art instead of wasted stock footage! Seriously, the Bunnies transform multiple times and the other girls transform like once, so they won’t have to bloat episodes with unnecessary plot lines just to reuse their animation so much. Ooh, real-time attacks instead of stock ones?!? Will we get a Pluto SMC proper henshin, and a full Saturn one???
Ps I’m also just stoked we finally have news. Although I’m sad it may mean that we won’t get some Figuarts out of this deal. I love my SMC one!!

One of my favorites too. I think a movie will be a perfect setting for it. It’s pretty dramatic and epic. I can picture movie 1 ending with Artemis getting crushed trying to save Mina. And the power up of every single character in the final battle just screams movie to me.
Also, they don’t transform a lot so they won’t have to inject unnecessary plot lines into individual episodes just so they can recycle animation.

The actual footage of each episode in the crystal series is like 20 mins if you cut out the opening and closing credit footage, the teasers for the next episode, the rehash of the last episode.
So I think this can be really doable for a ten chapter manga into two movies.

I’m disappointed. This means Infinity couldn’t salvage what they broke with the origin and black moon arcs. Not enough money was made to make a show, but just enough money was made to try to milk us for more merch by putting this out. This will mean no adaptation of the Stars Arc and no Sailor Comos which was what I was looking forward to the most. (I WAS looking forward to a kiss between Neptune and Uranus but alas they wouldn’t give us that).
Better then nothing. Hopefully they’ll be able to end it right with Season 5. Even if it’s movies too. Beggars can’t be choosers right? LOL

Why can’t it just be a season like the other 3?? Ugh.. this is so aggravating… tired of waiting… an now a two part movie? Wth?? This is disappointing… but I am greatful we are getting anything at all. I’m just afraid they will skip out on a lot of stuff making it into a two part movie. However I do hope if it’s a movie it’s longer than 2 hours. An I’m scared that stars will be the same, just don’t wanna miss anything important :/
A good reason for this is likely the animator crisis in japan. For the past few years japans had such a high demand for anime to be produced but so few animators to do the work that corners have been getting cut and projects have been getting delayed.
I understand the animator crisis, and the hell they go through, so I am willing to be patient.
Then don’t make so many animes. There’s a high demand so they’re making a bunch of 12 episode lame animes. Why not just focus on the most popular ones so they aren’t so piled up with work.
Well, a movie will is usually around 2 hours long. An episode is usually around 20 min long. So if you break down one movie into episodes you will get around 6 episodes. Because this season will be split into two movies you will have about 4 hours worth of Material wich again can be splitted into 12 episodes. Which is around the same amount of episodes most animes get lately.

Let me just put this out there so everyone will stop telling me the same thing over an acting like I’m not happy. I am happy. I’m extremely happy. An I can’t wait for S4.. I am just disappointed as millions of other fans are. An I’m allowed to be ok :) I’m pretty much over it now, an am super excited.

Crystal was crap. Had us waiting years longer, and then made us wait TWO weeks for a new episode with TERRIBLE animation quality.. ON AN EXTREMELY WELL KNOWN ANIME like Sailor Moon.
Crystal S3 is better at least.. so I don’t know. So long as they don’t cut corners.
Don’t care much for this arc anyhow, so eh. I also dislike how the first two arcs are Crystal and then the third arc is SM Crystal III and now the 4th arc is a film.. such inconsistency x’D
Edit: The one positive thing I can think of is that we might get it faster than a normal anime (if it’s not in JP theaters b/c we will have to wait until it comes to the US..) and it’ll probably have better animation since it’ll be a film. (hopefully)
Those issues are due to the current animator crisis in japan. Infortunatley it cant be helped. Sailor moon isnt the only show affected. It took 4 years for a new attack on titan season that was only half the length of the first.
Yeah but Toei in general as a company is lazy and cuts corners.. I am aware of the crisis and watched a video from the animeman on that subject. But I also know other studios with less money don’t do the crap toei does.
The thing is the agony of waiting. haven’t we waited long enough? And the movie should have good lenght like 3hrs each

I really can’t wait to see this animated. Season 3 was well done, and Dream is my favorite arc. So many great things (spoilers warning):
In-depth character episodes leading to power-ups, Mamoru having a stronger presence, the Outers family, flashback to the Silver Millenium and children Senshi and baby Serenity, human cats. (And for funny bonus: Chibiusa becoming a teen with the correct hair style)
I will be spending all this time, eagerly waiting for this season, especially if it’s as good as the previous season.

It looks like a fusion of the 90’s anime with them looking like blobs of moe. Then again it is known as PreCure Moon on Tumblr which I agree with since the style’s so plain and generic.
Seasons 1 & 2 might’ve had it’s flaws but it’d work for the beauty that is the Dream arc. I want my senshi to look like they can wreck shit than giant blobs of moe with static hair.
