Sailor Moon Crystal Dream Arc “Sailor Moon Eternal” Movie (2021)
Sailor Moon Crystal “Season 4” is a 2-part theatrical release titled “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal: The Movie.” Part 1 was originally set for September 11th 2020 but due to the global pandemic, it was postponed to January 8th 2021. Part 2 released a month later on February 11th 2021. It’s now available on Netflix worldwide from June 3 2022 for International viewers!
Sailor Moon Eternal is based on the Dream Arc/Dead Moon Arc, known as ‘Sailor Moon SuperS’ in the 90s anime series, though it follows closely to the manga (which has a very different storyline and new characters)!
The story follows on from Sailor Moon Crystal season 3’s cliffhanger ending; with Usagi and Chibiusa hearing the sound of a bell.
Chiaki Kon (director for Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3) directed the two films. Kazuko Tadano (character designer for the original 90s Sailor Moon anime) returned to design characters for the project.

Why is Sailor Moon in her Eternal form? Isn’t this Season 4 (SuperS)?
Good question! If you’re familiar with the 90s anime, Usagi does not become Eternal Sailor Moon until the 5th and final arc “Sailor Stars”. This is because “Sailor Moon Crystal” follows the storyline of the manga, and Usagi and the other Sailor Guardians become their “Eternal” forms towards the end of this arc.

God these movies were a load of half-baked shallow nostalgia dependant garbage. Crystal is still one of the most insultingly awful and overrated Animes I have ever sat through…

This movie was totally overhyped frankly. Again all they did was lazily copy the rushed and half baked plot of the manga, and made zero attempt to try and fix any of the flaws that plagued Crystal.
All the usual characters were still paper thin or superfluous. The villains sucked. There was no plot. And it shamelessly leaned heavily on nostalgia and familiarity to carry it.
The Reason behind calling it Eternal I do believe deals with Nehelenia wanting to put the Earth into and Eternal darkness/slumber so that there is no White moon and then in the second part it pertains to Sailor moon reaching the Eternal power level. So Eternal does make sense if you think of it that way but if you only base it on her outfits no it doesn’t make sense. I hope to watch this soon as I have time to see just how good it is. Fingers crossed it makes me happy or that I can watch it subbed not listen to the new dub voices….not fond of the ones for Crystal dub
I really want to see it so badly that I wish that I could speak Japanese. I want to fly over there and watch it. Or at least download the subbed version of it to my computer without have to pay for it.
I love sailor moon but because we have to wait so long to see the movie.
Frankly, I am not excited about this in the slightest. Crystal 1 – 2 was just painfully bad. S3 I didn’t find much better, and the Inner Senshi were as pathetic as before…
The fact that they are clearly relying a lot more heavily on nostalgia to attract interest says a lot for me.
I’m predicting the same general laziness from Toei, in that the characters outside of Usagi/Mamoru and Chibi Usa will get shafted. The narrative will be a clumsy copy and paste of the manga with all it’s flaws ‘faithfully’ adapted, and every single villain will be flat and interchangeable.
agreed, I hated crystal the animation was horrendous and the flow of the story was chaotic. What I loved about the original was gone, I really liked that it was quite dark at times and the new one doesn’t have this. I do hope though that they can at least put some effort into these 2 ones ….hopefully they have kept some of the darker elements eg the music and atmosphere
You know the story.. Crystal S 1, 2, 3 and even the movies are all based on the Manga in it’s entirety from beginning to end. I think they did a great job following the Manga which is a lot more dark than the 90s show.
No me importa si es fiel o no al manga, si soy una fanática de Sailor moon y mi inocencia de niña se plasmó en cada historia, se basen o no en la nostalgia no me importa, lo que me importa es que puedo ver ambas versiones (90’s y cristal {basado en el manga}) y siempre regresaré en el tiempo a cuando era una niña inmensamente feliz con Serena, Usagi o como la conozcan cada quien en su país. I can’t disagree that the animation has been sloppy and the pacing off at times, but for me the classic version of fourth arc wasn’t done well. I didn’t care for the story or the animations they made for Twinkle Yell and Moon Gorgeous Meditation. Then I read the manga and found it so much more interesting!! So despite the failings with Sailor Moon Crystal, I’m quite interested to view the story as it should be :)

If you take out the extra details of episode and instead have fish, hawk and tigers eye focus on getting mirrors from the inner senshi instead of randos the movie does move along quite quickly… plus Airbender started as a show then became live action and had to character build. This is just a continuing of the show just in movie form. If they do SM Stars they will have the time to do episodes right

In the 90s series, which for some reason started with the end of the deadmoon arc instead of teasing the eternal costume at the end of season 4 and starting fresh with the star arc in 5.

Well since this is based on the manga more closely then the 90s she would hopefully get the eternal outfit at the end but I agree with your title of the movie makes no sense it should be like sailor moon dream or something different
The colors and opacity is perfectly modeled after the manga artwork, but drawn in the original 90’s anime style. It’s beautiful! This gives me hope that it’s worth the years long wait!

Toei animators had a hard time transitioning their art style from ONE PIECE, probably the longest running modern-anime series ever, which was why it looked weird. But, they cleaned it up in the bluray editions. Also, Crunchyroll had original Japanese dialogue / English subbed versions. Try watching that instead to avoid the dubs.

Here’s an idea. Fix the mind numbingly lazy writing. Give the supporting cast some characterisation and substance that doesn’t revolve around propping up Usagi. Fight scenes that don’t consist of the Inners being slapped around, captured and brainwashed until either the Outers or Mamoru swoop in and look good at their expense. Villains who posses some degree of personality beyond ‘har har I’m evil’. And lastly stop relying on nostagia to draw in interest.

Follows clumsily, and doesn’t make any attempt to tidy up its problems, whilst relying a lot on blind bias and nostalgia to carry its weakness. Being closer to the source material doesn’t’ make something automatically ‘good’ or above criticism.

I agree with you. I’m excited to see this Season because it is my favorite arc in the manga. But I still feel just as critical as you about this. They’re relying way too much on the bs nostalgia and I’m so tired of it. It’s an excuse to not come up with new ideas. I was so excited to see what the Senshi’s new attacks would look like but it looks like they’re just replicating the lame 90’s versions. On top of that, I was hoping Sailor Moon’s new attack would also not look like the 90’s…but it does ._. The character development that’s lacking that you mentioned is partially due to the fact that they never expanded on the manga storyline. They could’ve extended fights and such but didn’t. They literally stripped the story of important details too. For example, they never showed direct imagery of Metalia coming from the sun and raining down onto the Earth as uncorrupted Beryl watched, they changed Beryl’s death to a lame necklace breaking stunt, they never addressed why Queen Serenity’s seal on Metalia was imperfect, and they censored a lot of scenes where deaths should’ve been at least slightly more graphic. It’s sad.
Okay I agree with a lot of your points. They should’ve shown where Metallia came from and why Queen Serenity’s seal wasn’t perfect (nice plot hole there left there).
Although I will point out that at least they differed from the Shitennou’s deaths so that we could actually get confirmation on something a LOT of people speculated about in terms of relationships between them and the Inner Senshi with the manga version.
There is one thing I will not agree with you on; the deaths. You do know that Sailor Moon is considered a Shoujo manga/anime right? Not a horror? Cause if you actually look at some of the manga deaths and think of them in terms of anime that’d be pretty graphic. I mean Jadeite gets burned ALIVE by Mars. Nephrite and Zoisite torn to shreds by Jupiter and Venus respectively. Kunzite gets killed by the Sailor Planet attack.
Beryl’s “weak” death is better than the actual one for anime. She gets stabbed by Venus. For any fan of Sailor Moon the manga version is acceptable for that death because in anime you have to make it look more real. It takes more time and really sinks in that, yes, a Sailor Scout just took a sword and shoved it into a person. In the manga it just feels like two seconds between her being stabbed and her turning into dust. You coprehend it but are more like “cool she turned to dust!”
That and I think they just didn’t want to have to put Sailor Moon in that position (since it was her in the anime that killed Beryl). It would seem like the ultimate wrong. I’d rather keep my good memories of a light hearted Sailor Moon than watch that kind of scene personally. Crystal can go a little dark, sure, but not THAT dark.

Frankly I fully expect this to suck as bad as the first two arcs did. I don’t care how different it is to the 90’s anime, or how ‘faithful’ it is to the tediously overated manga. If this had been some standalone project, no one would have given it the time of day. It’s completely dependant on bias and nostalgia…

I agree. The issue here is, had they had a larger budget, they could’ve made Crystal badass. The reality is, the manga (which I prefer over the misleading storyline of the 90’s anime) works as a comic book. However, because they had a shitty budget, Crystal turned out to be underwhelming because they did not add anything to the manga storyline. The manga does not translate well to anime unless more development was added to the characters. For example, the fight scenes could’ve been longer and more appealing instead of quick. In the manga, the fight scenes were quick in order to get through the story. I also don’t feel like the Crystal version is being faithful to the manga in terms of grotesque imagery. The change they made to Beryl’s death was pathetic and cheesy compared to her actual death in the manga (which was done by Venus not Sailor Moon). And the censoring they did with some of the deaths was disappointing (not showing Eudial’s daimon form, not showing Uranus cutting Viluy in half, making Tellu’s daimon less monstrous and mostly feminine with sharo teeth, etc.). Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to finally see my favorite arc be interpreted through animation— especially princess Serenity’s christening ceremony scene— but the trailer obviously reveals to us that they relied WAY TOO MUCH to the 90’s which isn’t even a legitimate source of the actual story. This lacks creativity of what their season 4 attacks could’ve looked like instead of relying on and catering to nostalgia and all that bs. Nostalgia is great but tbh Crystal is overdoing it at this point. I figured this would happen once they mentioned recruiting that one artist from the 90’s anime. Sigh….
I totally agree about the lack of creativity and how the manga translate poorly into anime..the pace doesn’t work. If you just recreate everything panel by panel without adding anything, it tends to fall flat…

I feel like they could have made it faithful to the manga without making it EXACTLY like the manga, if that makes sense. The pacing all feels off when adapting manga panels into animation frames.

But for the stars i need some different from the manga like reviving the shitennou (the four knights of prince endymion)
Not really sure how I feel about this! I was really looking forward to having the dream arc be spread out into 13 episodes like the previous seasons and now everything is being combined into one giant 2-part movie?! I mean, I wish the Dream arc could get the same treatment as seasons 1-3 did, but if both movies have a run time that’s just as about as long as the Harry Potter films, then I could definitely get on board.

I’m all for new Sailor Moon movies! This will be great. Lately I can’t really stick with 13 episodes, my attention span doesn’t handle that anymore. This is a better alternative. Just as long as the pacing is done great. I’m very certain the animation will be better than in the series. You know, budget wise. Movies are almost always better animation quality than in the actual show. So maybe this will make up for it not being a season.

I’m fine with it being a 2 part movie. The entire SuperS season was pretty uneventful and could probably be skipped altogether without really missing anything in Stars.
I absolutely hate this. This arc is so important to the development of every character and I’m betting that nothing will be addressed just like in the original.
All of you guys are forgetting that the 90s anime didn’t follow the manga at all. Cause it completely skipped over the actual 3rd power up for the sailor scouts which is planet power, but they never got their planet powers in 90s anime. Another reason the 90s anime didn’t follow the manga is sailors Uranus, Neptun, Saturn and Pluto were left out of SuperS,when they were in the manga.

Ok… so is it still the Dream Arc or the Princess Kaguya short Manga? As we all know, there was this Sailor Moon S Movie, Hearts On Ice. And it’s actually still based from the manga, a short season presenting Luna to appear as a human and disguised as Princess Kaguya, it came between Season 3 and 4. Could this be possibly a remake of this movie?
Although it could still be the Dream Arc since it only has 11 acts (Act 39 to 49) and most likely, more cuts especially humor scenes.
I’m on the fence about this. Dream Arc is 10 chapters total, and the last few minutes of season 3 was its opening. That’s 2 movies 2 and half hours long and would cover the whole storyline, which is MUCH better in the manga. Full disclosure, Dream Arc was my favorite Arc of the manga, but SuperS was my least favorite season. It was incredibly badly handled, plagued with bad animation, awful filler episodes, and the final battle that wasn’t. I was really hoping that they handle it well, because I’ve been wanting this since Crystal came out, and will be PISSED if comes out crap again.
This was also my favorite manga arc. It is like night and day comparing the super s manga to the super s 90s anime.
I think the dream arc manga was the most elaborate and in depth for story lines.
This might be possible. The anime series episodes was only like 20 mins of footage, if you get rid of commercial breaks and opening and closing credits and teasers for the next episode. :)

*GASP* WHAAAAAAT?! No way! I’ve actually gone back to watch 90’s season 4 (thank you, SMD event!) And I’m enjoying each episode. I have no idea HOW they’d do it as a movie. Call me a sucker for punishment, but I like how the drama is spelled out in the episodes. Hmmmm….

I think this might be for the best. I tried to get through Super S several times and couldn’t help but skip through most of it. Consolidating it into a streamlined story might be the best choice for this particular arc, and might even make it better. We shall see.

More budget! Same director!! Movies will be a perfect setting for how epic the entire Dead Moon arc is! Their power ups at the end ALONE will be brilliant!!! One-time transformations that will (hopefully) be works of art instead of wasted stock footage! Seriously, the Bunnies transform multiple times and the other girls transform like once, so they won’t have to bloat episodes with unnecessary plot lines just to reuse their animation so much. Ooh, real-time attacks instead of stock ones?!? Will we get a Pluto SMC proper henshin, and a full Saturn one???

Just as long as they do it justice. The Dream Arc is my favorite arc in the manga.
One of my favorites too. I think a movie will be a perfect setting for it. It’s pretty dramatic and epic. I can picture movie 1 ending with Artemis getting crushed trying to save Mina. And the power up of every single character in the final battle just screams movie to me.
Also, they don’t transform a lot so they won’t have to inject unnecessary plot lines into individual episodes just so they can recycle animation.

The actual footage of each episode in the crystal series is like 20 mins if you cut out the opening and closing credit footage, the teasers for the next episode, the rehash of the last episode.
So I think this can be really doable for a ten chapter manga into two movies.
I hope this does well, because I want to see stars and the short stories make it to animation. :)
I’m disappointed. This means Infinity couldn’t salvage what they broke with the origin and black moon arcs. Not enough money was made to make a show, but just enough money was made to try to milk us for more merch by putting this out. This will mean no adaptation of the Stars Arc and no Sailor Comos which was what I was looking forward to the most. (I WAS looking forward to a kiss between Neptune and Uranus but alas they wouldn’t give us that).
Better then nothing. Hopefully they’ll be able to end it right with Season 5. Even if it’s movies too. Beggars can’t be choosers right? LOL

Why can’t it just be a season like the other 3?? Ugh.. this is so aggravating… tired of waiting… an now a two part movie? Wth?? This is disappointing… but I am greatful we are getting anything at all. I’m just afraid they will skip out on a lot of stuff making it into a two part movie. However I do hope if it’s a movie it’s longer than 2 hours. An I’m scared that stars will be the same, just don’t wanna miss anything important :/
A good reason for this is likely the animator crisis in japan. For the past few years japans had such a high demand for anime to be produced but so few animators to do the work that corners have been getting cut and projects have been getting delayed.
I understand the animator crisis, and the hell they go through, so I am willing to be patient.
Then don’t make so many animes. There’s a high demand so they’re making a bunch of 12 episode lame animes. Why not just focus on the most popular ones so they aren’t so piled up with work.
Well, a movie will is usually around 2 hours long. An episode is usually around 20 min long. So if you break down one movie into episodes you will get around 6 episodes. Because this season will be split into two movies you will have about 4 hours worth of Material wich again can be splitted into 12 episodes. Which is around the same amount of episodes most animes get lately.

Let me just put this out there so everyone will stop telling me the same thing over an acting like I’m not happy. I am happy. I’m extremely happy. An I can’t wait for S4.. I am just disappointed as millions of other fans are. An I’m allowed to be ok :) I’m pretty much over it now, an am super excited.

Crystal was crap. Had us waiting years longer, and then made us wait TWO weeks for a new episode with TERRIBLE animation quality.. ON AN EXTREMELY WELL KNOWN ANIME like Sailor Moon.
Crystal S3 is better at least.. so I don’t know. So long as they don’t cut corners.
Don’t care much for this arc anyhow, so eh. I also dislike how the first two arcs are Crystal and then the third arc is SM Crystal III and now the 4th arc is a film.. such inconsistency x’D
Edit: The one positive thing I can think of is that we might get it faster than a normal anime (if it’s not in JP theaters b/c we will have to wait until it comes to the US..) and it’ll probably have better animation since it’ll be a film. (hopefully)
Those issues are due to the current animator crisis in japan. Infortunatley it cant be helped. Sailor moon isnt the only show affected. It took 4 years for a new attack on titan season that was only half the length of the first.
Yeah but Toei in general as a company is lazy and cuts corners.. I am aware of the crisis and watched a video from the animeman on that subject. But I also know other studios with less money don’t do the crap toei does.
The thing is the agony of waiting. haven’t we waited long enough? And the movie should have good lenght like 3hrs each

I feel like this is a copout and I fear for the character development of some of my favourite characters. :/ But we shall see.
I’m so iffy on it. There is a lot that can go missing in an anime movie. Like a lot, butnso far Crystal has kept an amazing pace with the reality that is the manga.

I really can’t wait to see this animated. Season 3 was well done, and Dream is my favorite arc. So many great things (spoilers warning):
In-depth character episodes leading to power-ups, Mamoru having a stronger presence, the Outers family, flashback to the Silver Millenium and children Senshi and baby Serenity, human cats. (And for funny bonus: Chibiusa becoming a teen with the correct hair style)
I will be spending all this time, eagerly waiting for this season, especially if it’s as good as the previous season.
Yup, I agree! If the trend tells us anything the seasons should only get better :D Fingers crossed it won’t disappoint.

It looks like a fusion of the 90’s anime with them looking like blobs of moe. Then again it is known as PreCure Moon on Tumblr which I agree with since the style’s so plain and generic.
Seasons 1 & 2 might’ve had it’s flaws but it’d work for the beauty that is the Dream arc. I want my senshi to look like they can wreck shit than giant blobs of moe with static hair.
How about redo seasons 1 & 2 with this style??

Im so psyched to potentially see the sailor quartet but im gonna be sad to lose as much air time for the amazon trio!! They were my favorite in the classic anime but they werent very big villains in the manga so i dont expect them to have a huge role in season 4 either :'(
A (hopefully) better adaptation of the Dream arc than SuperS~ Ooh and Phobos and Deimos’ human forms, ditto the cats’ human forms.
