I am more intrigued at wondering how on earth did the grill knew Haruka is a girl when 5 school girls and one Star Fighter mistook her as a boy.

I thought Haruka was first drawn to be not that feminine (no eyelashes, boy clothes). She did become more feminine over time, and I was wondering if Takeuchi did it because she couldn’t draw guys that well.

It is actually funny. In the past when there looked like there would be no hope of the S Season getting dubbed due to Haruka and Michiru’s relationship, fans would say, “They are awesome characters and I want the S season dubbed! Make them sisters/cousins/really good friends if you have to!”

Truthfully, I think those who say Amara and Michelle suck is because they actually do suck – some just like to add in the cousin bit for icing on the cake. The dub destroyed their characters as well as Sailor Pluto’s. They did do a better job with Rini from S Season on, though. Dic’s dubbing of the R Season ruined her. -__-
It’s a good thing we’re getting a brand new redub of the series :3

I’m beyond excited about this remake I too am 24 and I remember watching sailor moon as a child but never felt an attachment to any of the sailor scouts until Haruka and Michiru came into play.i totally crushed on Haruka and didn’t put two and two together until I found my fiancé Keira.I’ll be beyond happy if they are lovers instead of cousins which upset me as I live in Canada
haha yes! They will definitely no longer be cousins if Sailor Moon Crystal gets to show the third season :D Regardless though, I think we can at least all be excited that VizMedia is releasing Sailor Moon (90s anime) in its full uncut, uncensored glory :D

I’m 24 and grew up watching the English Dub of Sailor Moon. Haruka and Michiru came into the storyline when I was around 13-14, and I instantly knew that they were lovers. I’m bisexual myself, something I didn’t fully discover and accept until I was 20 when I began a lesbian relationship with a college classmate (we’re both bi, and, as I found out recently when she posted her excitement over the new Sailor Moon: Crystal anime and manga, both fans of SM.) While discussing the changes that would occur, she posted: (and I quote…) “One thing’s for sure. Haruka and Michiru ain’t ‘cousins’ this time around…! :)”

I find it funny that even as a 7 year old who knew nothing of homosexuality I was still able to instantly recognize these two as lovers even without the music and rose petals lol Though that immediate recognition may just have been my own lesbianism showing through at a young age ^^; the worst part was my confusion after my younger sister got in my face and furiously argued that they were cousins. she has since come to accept the truth. |D

As soon as I saw them in the Dic version, I was like: “Yeah…sure they’re cousins…I have cousins, and I do NOT hug them like that.” My next thought was that the Dic dub was an epic fail. They tried to turn an anime for teens into a show for little kids.

Man, the English dub is lame. You could still tell that Haruka and Michiru were a couple despite the poor attempt to turn them into cousins for the English dub. Shame on them for trying to ruin one of the best relationships in the show!

Naoko Takeuchi said they aren’t cousins.. is just the english version of Sailor Moon that made them cousins.
True. In the manga and the original there are many scenes that make it ABUNDANTLY clear that they are/were lovers. The English version of SM started the ‘cousin’ ruse for the same reason that only the first few episodes of the Stars season was broadcast in the US. Highly critical fans need to remember that anime on a whole was intended for teens 15-18. The show was highly censored in the US, and even an entire season cut out so it could be marketed to young girls. I was born in 1990 and watched the anime from 1997-2005 when it stopped broadcasting on Cartoon Network.
I heard the French had a different way of hiding their relationship.
They made it seem like Haruka pretended to be a man in civilian form to hide her identity, and Michiru pretended to be “his” girlfriend. That still beats making them cousins.. XD

there is nothing wrong with their choice/preference of their sexuality. and it’s better to keep those opinions to yourself; otherwise it’ll turn into a controversial debate, and lets not forget that some people will find your statement very offensive.
I personally don’t mind homosexuality in a tv show/movie/book as long as it’s tastefully done and the characters aren’t totally stereotyped. HOWEVER, as for your complaint about either. Which would you prefer? Lesbians or lesbian incestuous cousins? The first is what Naoko-sensei drew and intended, the latter is what the dub portrayed them to be despite their best intentions.
The english dubbers made them “Cousins” because they didn’t like how Sailor Uranus and Neptune were lovers.

Not sure if you ever saw that episode of the Simpsons where Homer becomes a hippie with some of his mothers’ old friends?
In that episode, Homer by accident places drugs in the juices those guys made and the whole city gets high. Well there was a scene where Grandpa Simpson and his friend are sitting at a bench in the park drinking the juice, and it caused them to laugh and act like Beavis & Butthead.
Sometimes, I imagine that Haruka & Michiru were sitting there drinking that juice, and doing the same thing, only instead of saying “We are old people” one would say “We are lesbians” and the other would say “that is so cool” and then laugh like Beavis and Butt head.

I laughed so hard at this! Well, even if the Mexican dub did kind of hid it, I totally got they were lesbian from the get go the first time I saw it…and I was 12! I didn’t make a big deal about it :P. Funny enough, I think right now it really doesn’t matter if they put it on in the right time format– like adult swim for example. But I think it’s too late for that, since sailor moon is now posted in youtube, veoh, etc. The cat is out of the bag!

They’re like one of the only couples in Sailor Moon that we see a lot of and has a relationship like Usagi and Mamoru’s. The others aren’t really official couples, like for the other senshi… But I absolutely LUV Helios and Chibiusa!! Great job as always!!

AH yes, that’s me doing it! I apologise for the weird mixing ups, but I shortened the “threaded comments” so it doesn’t go all weird and break the layout. In other words, instead of having 10 “replies” to one comment, I’ve limited it 5 “replies” so the hierarchy doesn’t turn too small (if that makes any sense). In the future we shouldn’t have this issue anymore :) I’ll see what I can do to make it look neater.

For me I used to love H&M since I was a kid, but without having in mind that they are lesbians or whatever. I mean, I don’t think kids will know about that. Plus, even in their conversations (in Japanese) there is that kind of ambiguity, and till now, some people still wonder whether they are lovers or just very close friends. So, I don’t think Haruka and Michiru’s dialog show them obviously as lesbians. And one last thing, if they are cousins, so they are not lovers!!!! I don’t understand such an equation!!!!
I didn’t really get it either when I watched it as a kid- I didn’t even have any clue they were lesbians even though I watched the Cantonese dub, which was uncut! lol. Little innocent us, ehhee.

Just realised there ARE HEAPS of gay characters in the Simpsons. Hypocritical?
See, I’m not so sure. I mean, The Simpsons is aimed at an older demographic unlike Sailor Moon, whose dub was aimed at young children, so they would be allowed to have gay characters, since, ideally, the show would only be viewed by people who can grok (and accept!) the concept of homosexuality, without (in the conservative’s eyes, not in my eyes or the eyes of liberals/leftists) turning them into gays.
Even though a lot of kids watched the Simpsons! I remember back in primary when everyone was saying Simpsons was their favourite cartoon XD When I was a kid, I thought all cartoons were for kids.
So did I, actually. ^_^
Me three LOL! Actually everybody around me think in this way and I spend some of my time trying to explain that NOT ALL CARTOONS ARE FOR KIDS! That’s in vain most of the time especially with my mom ^^;; and my best friend when I try to convince her to go to the cinema to watch a cartoon movie with me -__-;
I was wondering when someone would put up the lesbian/cousin thing. English dubbers shouldn’t switch out some of the originals because chances are, they kids have probably already heard of the topics. So why not just show the world what these kind of things are. It’s not fair to American children to have the same show, but the show be so different from the original.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, I think the reason Haruka and Michiru’s relationship wasn’t dubbed is because conservatives, based on certain Bible passages that really shouldn’t be taken seriously (a good rule of thumb for the New Testiment is that if Jesus Himself didn’t say it, don’t take it too seriously), think homosexuality is wrong and immoral. They think that childhood exposure to gays and lesbians will cause a person to choose to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc., etc.(even though you don’t choose your sexual orentation, rather you are born with it). So, rather than incur the wrath of the conservatives powers that be, Cloverway and the Cartoon Network just cut it out. ‘Tis a shame, I know.
Does anyone know if this is only in the case of the English dub? I watched the Chinese dub I don’t remember anything being changed from the original either… none of this cousin business.
I’m fairly sure that the English dub was the only dub to take the “cousins” route; however some dubs (like the Italian dub, IIRC) made them “best friends”, the French dub made them battle partners only with Haruka pretending to be a guy and Michiru pretending to be Haruka’s girlfriend, and the German dub just made dialogue between the two a lot more ambigous. I don’t really think Haruka x Michiru would be such a problem in Asain countries, since they seem to be more tolerant of things considered taboo in Western cultures like homosexuality, sexuality in general, nudity, etc., etc.
Oh that’s pretty interesting, never knew about that. They all sound pretty plausible.. especially the one about them pretending to be lovers- i.e it seems more believable they behave the way they do (instead of the English one where it just doesn’t make sense for two cousins to be so intimate). I also prefer the idea of them being vague/ambiguous in their dialogues, as oppose to just denying the relationship overall.
Oh, and the Mexican dub actually retained Haruka and Michiru’s relationship, so…uh…yeah. Puttin’ that out there.
So do I. I mean, the demographic the dub is aimed at isn’t necessarily going to notice vague sexual references, so really, what’s the harm in throwing in an ambiguous lesbian remark in here and there? Besides, if it really and truly got to the point that conservative groups were going to set of Optimum Productions ablaze and kill everyone who ever had an affiliation with the production of the dub over those little bitty pseudo-homoerotic comments that half the people watching won’t even notice(I’m not a conservative- can you tell?), CWi and Cartoon Network could always do what Sesame Workshop does when people accuse Bert and Ernie of being gay: insist that they’re not. Of course, that could just be as bad as flat-out denying the relationship in the dub itself. *sigh* I guess English speaking countries (as a whole) can’t appreciate the sheer, awesome reality that is Haruka x Michiru.

Even though I knew the cousin thing was censorship when I first saw S I always got the feeling that “Cous” and “Cousin” was slang for “lesbian”. Kind of like “sister” and “brother” can be slang. Hardcore Moonies should just look at it from this point of view and you’ll find it pretty watchable.
That’s not really ‘gone wrong’…it’s more ‘lost in translation’. :P
